Safari Itineraries

Lake Turkana - The Jade Sea - is both the worlds biggest permanent desert lake and alkaline lake. Turkana is an outstanding region in terms of diversity of plant and animal communities, its unique geographical features, the richness of the surrounding traditional peoples and their cultures, notwithstanding the abundance of  fossils especially hominid fossils, that earned it the name 'The `Cradle of Mankind' which has contributed more to the understanding of paleo-environments than any other site on the continent.

The three Turkana National Parks serve as a stopover for migrant waterfowl and are major breeding grounds for the Nile crocodile, the Lessor Flamingo and hippopotami. In recognition of the above factors UNESCO listed the Parks as a natural World Heritage Site.

Then there is the most impressive and overlooked northern Delta area of the Lake and its intriguing Dassanech tribe. Picture a tribe who once as pastoralists whose home range covered lands within the three countries and who are not defined by ethnicity having absorbed several different ethnic groups yet operating as an egalitarian society. Comprising eight clans each with its own identity and customs rooted in a social system involving age sets and clan lineages both intertwined with strong reciprocity relationships while honouring its responsibilities to the larger tribe.

Today this tribe have been excluded to a small area largely the Omo Delta and are now agropastoral, yet in the face of adversity cling to their rich culture and traditions. Outstanding in it's splendor is the 'Dimi" ceremony in which a man becomes an elder. The whole village comes out dressed in fur capes to feast and dance, though the purpose of the ceremony is to celebrate and bless the celebrant's daughter for fertility and future marriage.
